Geometer's Sketchpad

Geometer’s Sketchpad is a dynamic software program which enables students to construct geometric figures, measure them and formulate conjectures.

Hartford Public High School has a site license for this software and it is now being used on a biweekly basis in general geometry classrooms.

Four  geometry teachers are involved. They are assisted by David Vania, a retired HPHS teacher, George Francis, a graduate student at Central Connecticut State University, and Tim Craine, chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at C.C.S.U.

Working with this software this team is helping make geometry come alive for students at Hartford Public High School and enable them to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts and skills required for the CAPT and success in future mathematics courses.

This Geosketchpad site is under construction and we will be adding examples of our objectives and lessons. While you are on the HPHS page, link up to our history.
We are the second oldest secondary school in the United States!!

"Geometer's SketchPad In an Urban Classroom"

Dr. Timothy Craine and David Vania presented a workshop on "Geometer's SketchPad In an Urban Classroom" at the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England Fall Conference in Killington, VT Oct 19-20,2006.

The workshop was well received and attended as many schools have Geometer's SketchPad, but do not use it on a regular basis as we do.  Teachers were very interested in how the program was run, how computer time was scheduled, and they wanted to see some sample lessons and student work.  We shared both and  the  Q & A  and sharing the last 15 was very informative.....especially by Hope HS, an inner city school in Providence, RI; as well as private schools,  suburban and rural public schools.  Two schools also asked for possible in-service for the teachers in their schools!  We received a wonderful thumbs up by all the participants at the end of the workshop.
